66 – Casteism Across Borders: Diasporic Reproduction of Caste Discrimination and Anti-Caste Struggles

Abstract

This paper is drawn from my doctoral research and presents a historical sociology of caste and its transformations in Southern Africa, during and since the migration period triggered by British, Dutch and Afrikaner Colonial enterprise in Natal since 1860 and soon after in Transvaal. It is also shaped by my orientation as 4th generation Indian South African, who has dealt with some of these themes in cinematic arts and performative work such as my short film Homecoming1 and live art performance Critical Intimacy in the Grave of a Tree2.
