Abstract

Co-creating peri-urban lake futures requires integrative and participatory approaches to navigate the intricate socio-ecological challenges associated with these dynamic and vulnerable systems and negotiate governance actors’ perspectives. Existing discussions highlight the need for sustainable governance of peri-urban ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of addressing trade-offs between urban development pressures and the provision of ecosystem services. Building on this knowledge and to address the complexities of peri-urban lake systems, this study seeks to investigate how participatory scenario-building can inform the development of adaptive socio-ecological indicators that capture these trade-offs while incorporating diverse perspectives of the governance actors (state and civil society). By bridging scenario techniques and governance actor engagement, this paper contributes to advancing integrative frameworks for lake governance, offering tools to address the socio-ecological trade-offs that define peri-urban landscapes.
