08 – Contextualizing ‘Divination’: Perspectives from South Asia

Abstract

The study of these dreams will be located in a wider inquiry about the
Early Buddhist attitude towards the practice of oneiromancy which, to
say the least, is standing on very contesting grounds. The literature
dealing with oneiromancy raises two broader questions; 1. The
contradictions/negotiations within the Buddhist tradition regarding the
position of these practices, 2. The negotiation/dialogue between the
Buddhist and non- Buddhist tradition.
