Abstract

Therefore, when electoral fairness protests emerge, they provide a thrust towards democratization and threaten the interests of rent-seeking elite. Because of their presumed democratization potential, electoral fairness protests trigger episodes of intense repression that is not seen for other kinds of protests that also challenge the regime in these settings. This paper analyzes the impact of electoral fairness protests on hybrid regime stability and critically estimates their potential for democratization in a case study on Pakistan.
