Abstract

Over the past decade, an increasing number of unaccompanied Bangladeshi minor migrants have arrived in France, with almost all of them originating from Sylhet, a region traditionally associated with migration to Europe. Once their minority status is officially recognized by the State – which is often the case for young people from this country-, many of them are quick to seize the opportunities for vocational training made available to them within the French educational system. Nearly all of these boys choose training in culinary arts, with the ambition of eventually starting their own businesses in France. Based on regular interviews and personal connections established with young Bangladeshis, both in urban and rural areas, this presentation aims to shed light on how these youths arrive in France and the strategies they develop to achieve their aspirations for success.
