120 – Pedagogy from the Margins: Critical Perspectives from South AsiaAbstract
Power, privilege, and benefits are existent in every kind of inter personal relationships. Such inter personal relationships are not just limited to individual level but also are operative at institutional and cultural level. Education is one of the sector that showcase a colourful canvas of cultural dynamics. Against the idea of cultural competence that is mostly prevalent in educational systems across the globe, cultural humility serve as a repository to liberate the boundaries of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education arena. It is a resourceful technique to undo the power imbalances and inequalities gaps among the elements of education. At tertiary or higher education level, students and teachers come from diverse backgrounds bringing forth their unique experiences of intersectional identities. These experiences and thought processes are shaped by a particular set of knowledge which often overlooks community differences. For instance, if a college or university caters to a particular class interest then it will foster ideas that are suitable to this particular class thereby transforming itself as a norm in this particular setting. It will miss out on addressing issues of accessibility for other social classes that are existing on the margins. As higher education is a stage where students and educators are comparatively more aware of their being and identities, it becomes necessary to tap in energies of multi and intersectional identities in multicultural higher education spaces.
