93 – Mantras: Transcultural and Multisensory PerspectivesAbstract
This paper explores the phenomenon of “Skibidi Mantras”—a term denoting the incorporation of the viral “Skibidi” phrase into mantra-based practices in a contemporary yoga community. By examining the ways in which digital culture, social media trends, and mantra practices intersect, this study considers how non-traditional utterances take on performative, ritualistic, and even spiritual dimensions in contemporary contexts.
Drawing on nethnographic observations, digital humanities methodologies, this paper interrogates the ways in which mantra traditions are appropriated, adapted, and transformed in modern wellness movements. Through the case study of Sukadev from Yoga Vidya—a prominent European yoga figure who has integrated “Skibidi” into his mantra repertoire—this research examines whether such adaptations represent a form of creative engagement, commodification, or even a radical reconfiguration of the mantra tradition.
Key questions explored include: How do viral chants acquire ritual power in digital spaces? To what extent do humor, playfulness, and absurdity function within mantra transmission? How does movement enhance the kinesthetic aspects of mantra practice? Are these modern adaptations part of a long history of mantra evolution, or do they signal a rupture in traditional practice?
By situating “Skibidi Mantras” within broader discussions of sonic ritual, digital transmission, and the materiality of sound, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on how sacred utterances are transformed in the age of memes, virality, and globalized spirituality.
