The Ancient Constitution and the Ideological Origins of the Republic of India

Abstract

This paper situates India’s republican founding moment within long-standing debates over India’s “ancient constitution.” The paper seeks to understand the constitutional thought and impact of Nehru and Ambedkar in light of their writings on ancient India and, in particular, the idea of dharma as law.
