09 – The Dynastic Dilemma in Democracies: Exploring Political Dynasticism in South AsiaAbstract
The political landscape of Andhra Pradesh offers a compelling study of dynastic politics, particularly through the influence of caste politics. Known for their control over media, politics, the IT industry, and other business sectors with social capital and global networks, Kammas, the dominant community in coastal Andhra, have strategically positioned their leaders in all major political parties (Upadhya, 1997). This is true of the ruling Telugu Desham party, which currently faces a dilemma in future leadership (Suri, 2002). In this context, Lokesh, the son of the current Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, is being groomed as the heir to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). However, Lokesh faces strong competition from Jagan Mohan Reddy, the main opposition leader and former Chief Minister. Reddy inherited the leadership of the YSR Congress and the legacy of his late father, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and remains a popular leader, backed by the Reddy community (Pingle, 2011). Additionally, Pawan Kalyan, a popular cinema star and leader of the Jana Sena party, with substantial support from the Kapu community, has positioned himself as another key contender for leadership in the state (Banakar, 2024). All three leaders represent the three dominant caste communities in Telugu states (Prasad, 2015). Analyzing these three dynastic forces, the paper shows how caste and community shape the dynamics of power and succession in determining the political future of Andhra Pradesh.
